Mountain ascents can be considered as significant points determining the overall character of respective year since the first year of this competition. Their inclusion to the stage itinerary is annually highly anticipated performances momentum for next year. In summarizing historical development, it is difficult to obtain an accurate overall table listing of each climb into stages.
The problem is, among other things, the classification of ascents into particular categories; for certain ascents the specification of category depends also on the direction from which the top of the ascent was reached during the stage. Our analysis attempts to cover in particular the ascents of the second, first and of the so-called “Hors category”.
For this reason, we made the analysis of statistical materials distributed at the official site of the Tour de France (letour.fr, Guide Historique 2013). The absolute location accuracy is not so necessary, the collected data may identify the main trends in shaping this sport event during its 110 year history. In addition to other ones, the database also contains all ascents which were included at least once in the so-called “Hors categories”, which was presented in 1979.
In yearly presentation of routes, attention of not only cyclists but also of cycling fans and favourers focuses on the presentation of mountain ascents, which form an integral part of each Tour de France. Therefore a historical view of this specific significant element of Tour de France stages is very interesting and globally it can be entitled a certain “fight“ between the Alps and the Pyrénées
Here we would like to express our respect and thanks to all participants and organizers of this prestige event, as well as to highlight the possibilities of geography and bring a new look at this phenomenon
